Concept explainers
In the water pump of Problem 10.8, the pump casing acts as a diffuser, which converts 60 percent of the absolute velocity head at the impeller outlet to static pressure rise. The head loss through the pump suction and discharge channels is 0.75 times the radial component of velocity head leaving the impeller. Estimate the volume flow rate, head rise, power input, and pump efficiency at the maximum efficiency point. Assume the torque to overcome bearing, seal, and spin losses is 10 percent of the ideal torque at Q = 0.065 m3/s.

- A propeller turbine develops 12,000hp, and rotates at 145rpm under a head of 20m. The outer and hub diameters are 4m and 1.75m, respectively. Calculate the inlet and outlet blade angles measured at mean radius if overall and hydraulic efficiencies are 85% and 93%, respectively. Show schematic diagram and provide solutions.arrow_forwardA Pelton wheel is to be designed for a head of 400 m when running at 500 rpm. The Pelton wheel develops 10000kW shaft power. The blade angle at outlet is 15º. The relative velocity of water is reduced by 5% by moving over the buckets. Velocity of the buckets = 0.45 times the velocity of the jet, overall efficiency = 0.8 and coefficient of the velocity = 0.98. If the Pelton wheel is provided with three nozzle, find (i) The diameter of jet (ii) Total flow rate and the force exerted by a jet on the bucketsarrow_forwardA multi-jet Pelton turbine with a wheel 1.47 m diameter, operates under an effective head of 200 m at nozzle inlet and uses 4 m3/s of water. Tests have proved that the wheel efficiency is 88 per cent and the velocity coefficient of each nozzle is 0.99. Assuming that the turbine operates at a blade speed to jet speed ratio of 0.47, determine:(1) the wheel rotational speed;(2) the power output and the power specific speed;(3) the bucket friction coefficient given that the relative flow is deflected 165°;(4) the required number of nozzles if the ratio of the jet diameter to mean diameter of the wheel is limited to a maximum value of 0.113.arrow_forward
- A centrifugal pump with impeller diameter 500mm is designed for a discharge of 1.0m3/s of water. The water enters the pump axially, leaving the impeller with an absolute velocity of 12m/s at an angle of 20degrees to the tangent at the impeller periphery. The impeller is rotating at 700rpm. Determine the exit vane angle and the hydraulic power delivered.arrow_forward3) The MITL ME laboratory has installed a double-suction, three-stage, centrifugal pump with a discharge of 330 gpm under 200 ft head and running at 1200 rpm. It is proposed to install another pump with double suction and six stages, but of the same characteristics, to operate at 98 ft head and deliver 430 gpm. Calculate a) the speed of the proposed pump; b) the impeller diameter of the proposed pump if the diameter of the existing pump is 6 inches; and c) the type of the existing and the proposed pump.arrow_forwardParallel-connected double centrifugal pumps each have a specific speed of 28 and operate at 1350 rpm while delivering water with outlet velocity of flow of 3 m/s and performing 82% manometric efficiency. The impeller outer diameter and blade angle at outlet are 0.25 m and 25° to the tangent respectively. The double pumps are replaced by series-connected four centrifugal pumps to meet the same duty (same head and flow rate) with a specific speed of 30 for each pump. The outer diameter of the impeller is 0.5 m and passage width is 0.03 m. At exit, the blades are backward curved and making an angle of 14° with tangent. Draw the velocity diagrams at inlet and outlet. Determine the manometric efficiency of each pump for the in series connected pump system?arrow_forward
- A centrifugal pump discharges 96L/s while running at 1380rpm against a net head of 14m. The manometric efficiency of the pump is 0.92. If the vane angle at the outlet is 35 deg, estimate the outer diameter of the impeller and its width at that diameter. Assume the velocity of flow.arrow_forwardDetermine the recommended minimum speed (rpm) for a radial flow pump operating at 0.165 m3/s of water against a head of 300 marrow_forwardA Pelton wheel works on a head of 400 m. The diameter of the jet is 80 mm. The head loss in penstock and nozzle is 23.6 m. The bucket speed is 40 m/s. The buckets deflect the jet through 165 degree. The bucket friction reduces relative velocity at exit by 15% of the relative velocity at inlet. The mechanical efficiency of turbine is 90%. Find the flow rate and the shaft power developed by the turbine.arrow_forward
- A. A water jet of diameter 180 mm impinges on the buckets of a Pelton turbine having overall efficiency of 85% while operating under a net head of 500 m and at speed of 420 rpm. Find the specific speed of the turbine. Take coefficient of velocity of the jet as 0.98 and speed ratio as 0.46. B. The pitch circle diameter of a Pelton wheel is 0.9 m. A jet of water of diameter 80 mm gets deflected by an angle of 170° when it impinges on the buckets. The bucket friction coefficient and coefficient of velocity of jet can be taken as 0.93 and 0.97 respectively. If the net head available on the wheel is 500 m and speed ratio is 0.45, calculate (a) the power transferred to to the wheel by the jet, (b) hydraulic efficiency, and (c) specific speed of the turbine. Take mechanical efficiency of wheel as 0.9.arrow_forwardThe manometric head developed by a three-stage centrifugal pump runningat 450 rpm is 60 m. The width and diameter of each impeller at the outlet are60 mm and 750 mm, respectively, with outlet blade angle 45°. Determine itsmanometric efficiency, if discharge through the pump is 0.3 m^3/s.arrow_forwardA 1750 rpm centrifugal pump equipped with an 11-in.-diameter impeller requires 14.3 bhp when delivering 300 gpm at a head of 111 ft. Predict the new capacity, head, and power required when the impeller diameter is increased to 13 in.arrow_forward
