Experimental test data for an aircraft engine fuel pump are presented below. This gear pump is required to supply jet fuel at 450 pounds per hour and 150 psig to the engine fuel controller. Tests were conducted at 10, 96, and 100 percent of the rated pump speed of 4536 rpm. At each constant speed, the back pressure on the pump was set, and the flow rate was measured. On one graph, plot curves of pressure versus delivery at the three constant speeds. Estimate the pump displacement volume per revolution. Calculate the volumetric efficiency at each test point and sketch contours of constant ηυ. Evaluate the energy loss caused by valve throttling at 100 percent speed and full delivery to the engine.
* Fuel flow rate measured in pounds per hour (pph).

- Using affinity laws, develop a pump curve and BHP curve for a 1 ½" AB pump for a 6" impeller. Use a 1750 rpm curve as the "known" characteristics and develop a theoretical curve using affinity laws for 3500 rpm based upon flow rates 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 90 gpm at 1750 rpm. Plot the theoretical (affinity-based) and published flow vs. head and flow vs. horsepower curves for 3500 rpm.arrow_forwardA manufacturer of small water pumps lists the performance data for a family of its pumps as a parabolic curve fit, Havailable = H0 − aV.2 , where H0 is the pump’s shutoff head and a is a coefficient. Both H0 and a are listed in a table for the pump family, along with the pump’s free delivery. The pump head is given in units of feet of water column, and capacity is given in units of gallons per minute. (a) What are the units of coefficient a? (b) Generate an expression for the pump’s ree delivery V.max in terms of H0 and a. (c) Suppose one of the manufacturer’s pumps is used to pump water from one large reservoir to another at a igher elevation. The free surfaces of both reservoirs are exposed to atmospheric pressure. The system curve simplifies to Hrequired = (z2 − z1) + bV.2 Calculate the operating point of the pump (V. operating and Hoperating) in terms of H0, a, b, and elevation difference z2 − z1.arrow_forwardA centrifugal pump when tested with Brine of density 1190 kg per cubic meter discharged 60 liter per second against a pressure of 300 kPa. It is desired to investigate the change in power when a similar pump is used to pump petrol of density 700 kg per cubic meter against the same pressure. It is desired to keep the speed the same. Check whether any change in the drive motor is required. Assume an overall efficiency of 70% in both cases.arrow_forward
- 1. The pressure in a hydraulic system has 120 bars and the engine power of 55.21 kw. Calculate the capacity of the pump to supply the system?2. The above pump had an actual flow of 90 liters/minute at 207 bar. Calculate the power of the hydraulic engine system?arrow_forwardA single-stage centrifugal pump has an impeller speed of 1750 rpm. If the flow rate of water is 60 gal/min, determine the expected head. Choices: 45 ft 60 ft 29 ft 18 ftarrow_forwardThe volume flow rate of water that recirculates from the blade outlet to the impeller is estimated to be 0.4524 ft^3/min, and the losses through the shaft sealing is negligible. The hydraulic and mechanical efficiency of a centrifugal pump are 95% and 93%, respectively. If the pump delivers water a flow rate of 12 ft^3/min, calculate the pump efficiency in %.arrow_forward
- A well is going to be installed with a sucker rod pumping unit a. For the well to be installed with a sucker rod pump calculate the effective plunger stroke length for a well with a rod pump set at 3600 ft.
