Concept introduction:

Electrophilic addition to conjugated dienes produces a mixture of 1, 2 and 1, 4 addition products in different proportions. The distribution of the product, i.e., which of the two is the major product depends on the temperature. At low temperatures, the product that is formed fastest predominates. This addition is considered to be the one formed under kinetic control. At higher temperatures, the product that is more stable (has the lowest energy) predominates. This addition product is said to be formed under thermodynamic control.
