Solve for Unknowns: Step Method
RT Renovations is organized with two service departments (S1 and S2) and two production departments (P1 and P2). The company uses the step method to allocate service department costs, allocating from S1 to S2, P1, and P2 first. The cost accountant tells you that in November, $100,000 was allocated from S2 to P1 (including any cost allocated from S1 to S2). She also tells you that $50,000 was allocated from S1 to S2 in November.
P1 used 20 percent of S2 services and P2 used 60 percent of S2 services in November. Finally, S2 used 20 percent of S1 services in November.
Required
- a. What are the total costs incurred by S1 in November?
- b. What are the total costs incurred by S2 (before any allocations) in November?

DriveTrain, Incorporated instituted a new process in October 2023. During October, 10,800 units were started in Department A. Of the units started, 8,200 were transferred to Department B, and 2,600 remained in Work-in-Process at October 31, 2023. The Work-in-Process at October 31, 2023, was 100% complete as to material costs and 50% complete as to conversion costs. Material costs of $29,160 and conversion costs of $38,000 were charged to Department A in October.
What were the total costs transferred to Department B assuming Department A uses weighted-average process costing?
Assigning Costs to Activities, Resource Drivers
The Receiving Department has three activities: unloading, counting goods, and inspecting. Unloading uses a forklift that is leased for $21,000 per year. The forklift is used only for unloading. The fuel for the forklift is $3,700 per year. Other operating costs (maintenance) for the forklift total $1,500 per year. Inspection uses some special testing equipment that has depreciation of $1,750 per year and an operating cost of $1,750. Receiving has three employees who have an average salary of $50,000 per year. The work distribution matrix for the receiving personnel is as follows:

- Refer to Cornerstone Exercise 7.3 and solve for the allocated costs to Fabricating and Assembly using the direct method of support department cost allocation. The Fabricating Department overhead rate is based on normal activity of 82,000 machine hours. The Assembly Department overhead rate is based on normal activity of 160,000 direct labor hours. Job 316 required six machine hours in Fabricating and four direct labor hours in Assembly. Total direct materials cost 120, and total direct labor cost was 80. Required: 1. Calculate the overhead rate for Fabricating based on machine hours and the overhead rate for Assembly based on direct labor hours. (Round overhead rates to the nearest cent.) 2. Using the overhead rates calculated in Requirement 1, calculate the cost of Job 316. 3. What if Job 316 had required one machine hour in Fabricating and four direct labor hours in Assembly? Cicleta also began moving toward a JIT purchasing and manufacturing system. When JIT is fully implemented, the demand for expediting is expected to be virtually eliminated. It is expected to take two to three years for full implementation. Assume that receiving cost is a step-fixed cost with steps of 1,500 orders. The other three activities employ resources that are acquired as used and needed. At the end of 20x2, the following results were reported for the four activities: Required: 1. Prepare a trend report that shows the non-value-added costs for each activity for 20x1 and 20x2 and the change in costs for the two periods. Discuss the reports implications. 2. Explain the role of activity reduction for receiving and for expediting. What is the expected value of SQ for each activity after JIT is fully implemented? 3. What if at the end of 20x2, the selling price of a competing product is reduced by 27 per unit? Assume that the firm produces and sells 20,000 units of its product and that its product is associated only with the four activities being considered. By virtue of the waste-reduction savings, can the competitors price reduction be matched without reducing the unit profit margin of the product that prevailed at the beginning of the year? If not, how much more waste reduction is needed to achieve this outcome? In this case, what price decision would you recommend?arrow_forward
