Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The ionic solid and network solid needs to be differentiated.
Concept introduction:
The properties of network solid and ionic solid are almost similar like hardness, brittleness and high melting point but due to few properties there is difference between them.
Answer to Problem 65A
Ionic solid dissolve in water but, network solid does not dissolve in water. Ionic solid conducts electricity while network solid does not. Ionic solid forms crystals in which oppositely charged ions bond while network solid forms crystal in which atoms are bonded covalently to all surrounding atoms.
Explanation of Solution
As water is polar and ionic solids are formed by the strong attraction of oppositely charged ions so they can be dissolved in water as it attracts the positive and negative ions of ionic solids while network solids can’t be dissolved as they do not have ions that can interact with polar water molecules.
