Concept explainers
Concept Introduction:
Standard Costing system allows estimating the costs, preparing budgets for future periods, and analyzing the performance by comparing the budgets with actual results and find variances.
Static Budget and Flexible budget:
Static Budget is prepared on the basis of the expected level of output or production. The static budget shows the budgeted costs are revenue at an expected level of activity. The Flexible budget is prepared using the static budget. The Flexible budget is prepared to take the actual level of output or production as a basis.
To Indicate:

- CASH BUDGETING Helen Bowers, owner of Helens Fashion Designs, is planning to request a line of credit from her bank. She has estimated the following sales forecasts for the firm for parts of 2019 and 2020: Estimates regarding payments obtained from the credit department are as follows: collected within the month of sale, 10%; collected the month following the sale, 75%; collected the second month following the sale, 15%. Payments for labor and raw materials are made the month after these services were provided. Here are the estimated costs of labor plus raw materials: General and administrative salaries are approximately 27,000 a month. Lease payments under long-term leases are 9,000 a month. Depreciation charges are 36,000 a month. Miscellaneous expenses are 2,700 a month. Income tax payments of 63,000 are due in September and December. A progress payment of 180,000 on a new design studio must be paid in October. Cash on hand on July 1 will be 132,000, and a minimum cash balance of 90,000 should be maintained throughout the cash budget period. a. Prepare a monthly cash budget for the last 6 months of 2019. b. Prepare monthly estimates of the required financing or excess fundsthat is, the amount of money Bowers will need to borrow or will have available to invest. c. Now suppose receipts from sales come in uniformly during the month (that is, cash receipts come in at the rate of 1/30 each day), but all outflows must be paid on the 5th. Will this affect the cash budget? That is, will the cash budget you prepared be valid under these assumptions? If not, what could be done to make a valid estimate of the peak financing requirements? No calculations are required, although if you prefer, you can use calculations to illustrate the effects. d. Bowers sales are seasonal, and her company produces on a seasonal basis, just ahead of sales. Without making any calculations, discuss how the companys current and debt ratios would vary during the year if all financial requirements were met with short-term bank loans. Could changes in these ratios affect the firms ability to obtain bank credit? Explain.arrow_forwardPreparing a performance report Use the flexible budget prepared in P7-6 for the 29,000-unit level of activity and the actual operating results listed below for the 29,000- unit level. Required: 1. Prepare a performance report. 2. List the major reasons why the actual operating income at 29,000 units differs from the master budget operating income at 30,000 units in Figure 7-12. 3. Given the level at which the company operated, how was its cost control? Item Direct materials: Direct labor:arrow_forwardRefer to Cornerstone Exercise 8.6. Required: 1. Calculate the total budgeted cost of units produced for Play-Disc for the coming year. Show the cost of direct materials, direct labor, and overhead. 2. Prepare a cost of goods sold budget for Play-Disc for the year. 3. What if the beginning inventory of finished goods was 75,200 (for 16,000 units)? How would that affect the cost of goods sold budget? (Assume Play-Disc uses the FIFO method.) Play-Disc makes Frisbee-type plastic discs. Each 12-inch diameter plastic disc has the following manufacturing costs: For the coming year, Play-Disc expects to make 300,000 plastic discs, and to sell 285,000 of them. Budgeted beginning inventory in units is 16,000 with unit cost of 4.75. (There are no beginning or ending inventories of work in process.) Required: 1. Prepare an ending finished goods inventory budget for Play-Disc for the coming year. 2. What if sales increased to 290,000 discs? How would that affect the ending finished goods inventory budget? Calculate the value of budgeted ending finished goods inventory.arrow_forward
- Aspen Enterprises makes award pins for various events. Budget information regarding the current period is: A fraternity with which Aspen has a long relationship approached Aspen with a special order for 6,000 pins at a price of $2.75 per pin. Variable costs will be the same as the current production, and the special order will not impact the rest of the companys orders. However, Aspen is operating at capacity and will incur an additional $5,000 in fixed manufacturing overhead if the order is accepted. Based on this information, what is the differential income (loss) associated with accepting the special order?arrow_forwardPreparing a performance report Use the flexible budget prepared in P7-6 for the 31,000-unit level and the actual operating results listed below for the 31,000-unit level. Required: 1. Prepare a performance report. 2. List the major reasons why the actual operating income at 31,000 units differs from the master budget operating income at 30,000 units in Figure 7-12. 3. Given the level at which the company operated, how was its cost control? Item Direct materials: Direct labor:arrow_forwardBefore the year began, the following static budget was developed for the estimated sales of 100,000. Sales are sluggish and management needs to revise its budget. Use this information to prepare a flexible budget for 80,000 and 90,000 units of sales.arrow_forward
- Static budget versus flexible budget The production supervisor of the Machining Department for Hagerstown Company agreed to the following monthly static budget for the upcoming year: The actual amount spent and the actual units produced in the first three months in the Machining Department were as follows: The Machining Department supervisor has been very pleased with this performance because actual expenditures for May-July have been significantly less than the monthly static budget of2,358,000. However, the plant manager believes that the budget should not remain fixed for every month but should flex or adjust to the volume of work that is produced in the Machining Department. Additional budget information for the Machining Department is as follows: a. Prepare a flexible budget for the actual units produced for May, June, and July in the MachiningDepartment. Assume depreciation is a fixed cost. b. Compare the flexible budget with the actual expenditures for the first three months. What does this comparison suggest?arrow_forwardFriendly Bank is attempting to determine the cost behavior of its small business lending operations. One of the major activities is the application activity. Two possible activity drivers have been mentioned: application hours (number of hours to complete the application) and number of applications. The bank controller has accumulated the following data for the setup activity: Required: 1. Estimate a regression equation with application hours as the activity driver and the only independent variable. If the bank forecasts 2,600 application hours for the next month, what will be the budgeted application cost? 2. Estimate a regression equation with number of applications as the activity driver and the only independent variable. If the bank forecasts 80 applications for the next month, what will be the budgeted application cost? 3. Which of the two regression equations do you think does a better job of predicting application costs? Explain. 4. Run a multiple regression to determine the cost equation using both activity drivers. What are the budgeted application costs for 2,600 application hours and 80 applications?arrow_forwardReview the completed master budget and answer the following questions: Is Ranger Industries expecting to earn a profit during the next quarter? If so, how much? Does the company need to borrow cash during the quarter? Can it make any repayments? Explain. (Carefully review rows 74 through 80.)arrow_forward
- Performance Report Based on Budgeted and Actual Levels of Production Balboa Company budgeted production of 4,500 units with the following amounts: At the end of the year, Balboa had the following actual costs for production of 4,700 units: Required: 1. Calculate the budgeted amounts for each cost category listed above for the 4,500 budgeted units. 2. Prepare a performance report using a budget based on expected (budgeted) production of 4,500 units. 3. Prepare a performance report using a budget based on the actual level of production of 4,700 units.arrow_forwardBefore the year began, the following static budget was developed for the estimated sales of 50,000. Sales are higher than expected and management needs to revise its budget. Prepare a flexible budget for 100,000 and 110,000 units of sales.arrow_forwardPerformance Report Based on Budgeted and Actual Levels of Production Bowling Company budgeted the following amounts: At the end of the year, Bowling had the following actual costs for production of 3,800 units: Required: 1. Calculate the budgeted amounts for each cost category listed above for the 4,000 budgeted units. 2. Prepare a performance report using a budget based on expected production of 4,000 units. 3. Prepare a performance report using a budget based on the actual level of production of 3,800 units.arrow_forward
