Interpretation:
Monohydric alcohols are primary, secondary, tertiary alcohols. Alcohols are named according to number of carbon attached to carbon bearing hydroxyl group.
Primary alcohols: The alcohol in which –OH group is attached to a primary carbon atom are called primary alcohols.
Example:
Secondary Alcohol: The alcohol containing ---OH group attached to a secondary carbon atom are called secondary alcohol. Ex:
Tertiary alcohol: The alcohol containing ---OH group attached to a tertiary carbon atom are called tertiary alcohol. Example:
Therefore we can say number of carbons attached to carbon bearing the hydroxyl group determines the type of alcohol.
