Interpretation: Compound soluble or insoluble in water.

Conceptual Introduction:

Alcohols: Alcohols lower member are soluble in water due to their capability of forming intermolecular hydrogen bond with water. Alcohols are polar so they can form hydrogen bond with water molecule which is also polar in nature.

Alkanes: Are soluble in non-polar solvent like benzene. Due to their non-polar nature they have affinity for non-polar compound.
