Concept explainers
Interpretation:
“Give an explanation for each of the following observation.”
a. Ethanol is soluble in water, but propane is not.
b. Dimethyl ether is slightly soluble in water, but pentane is not.
c. 1-Porpanol is soluble in water, but 1-hexanol is not, should be explained
Concept introduction:
► Polarity of any substance is measuring as dipole moment and solubility of any substance depends on the following fact:
“like dissolves like”
► The solubility of solute in solvent is depending on the size of solute. Solubility is reciprocal to the size of solute means if the size of solute is small then solubility is greater and if the size of solute is big then solubility is lower.
