Chapter 14, Problem 13TYU, SYNTHESIZE YOUR KNOWLEDGE Some mutations result in proteins that function well at one temperature

Some mutations result in proteins that function well at one temperature but are nonfunctional at a different (usually higher) temperature. Siamese cats have such a “temperature-sensitive” mutation in a gene encoding an enzyme that makes dark pigment in the fur. The mutation results in the breed's distinctive point markings and lighter body color (see the photo). Using this information and what you learned in the chapter, explain the pattern of the cat’s fur pigmentation.

A gene affecting the behavioral outlook of individuals was discovered in several humans who can overcome anxiety caused by life's problems. Part of the gene that į translated into protein has a sequence 3'-GGATCCCGAATGTAATGCGTGCTC AATGGTAGTACGGC-5'. 1. What is the complementary strand of the DNA? 2. What is the sequence of the MRNA product after translation? 3. What is the sequence of the peptide encoded by the portion of the gene? (Use one letter symbol of amino acids)
. Let’s say that you have incredible skill and can isolate the white and red patches of tissue from the Drosophila eyes shown in Figure 12-24 in order to isolate mRNA from each tissue preparation. Using your knowledge of DNA techniques from Chapter 10, design an experiment that would allow you to determine whether RNA is transcribed from the white gene in the red tissue or the whitetissue or both. If you need it, you have access to radioactive white-gene DNA
Which of the following are possible reasons that a cell would regulate its expression of a gene? (Select all that apply.) (a) an increased need for a particular enzyme (b) a decreased need for a particular enzyme (c) increasing temperature in the external environment (d) changing needs as an organism ages (e) death
