Chapter 14, Problem 36SAE
Summary Introduction
To analyze:
The number of calories that are produced when 1 gram (gm) of carbohydrate, protein, and fat is oxidized and total kilocalories consumed. Calculate the kilocalories consumed if the person ate 100 gm of food, which consists of 20% protein, 30% carbohydrate, as well as 10% fat.
Introduction:
Nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are important for the production of energy in the body. They are broken down to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate). They give different amounts of energy. For example, carbohydrate gives 4 kcal/gm (kilocalories per gram) and fat yields 9 kcal/gm of energy. Kilocalorie is the unit that measures the energy value of the food.
