Chapter 15, Problem 15.72AQAP
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation:

The given half reaction should be balanced.

Concept Introduction:

A half reaction for a given redox chemical reaction shows the half component of a given redox reaction which means it will show the oxidation and reduction of half reactions separately.

In oxidation, loss of electrons occurs whereas in reduction, gain of electrons occurs.

A balanced reaction is a reaction in which number of atoms and charges should be equal on both reactant as well as on product side.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation:

If MnO2 is oxidized or reduced in the given cell reaction is to be seen.

Concept Introduction:

A redox reaction is meant to take place when the oxidation state of the atoms present in a chemical species is changed. In such a type of reaction, both oxidation and reduction of two different atoms present in the reactant molecules take place simultaneously. Any reactant is said to be oxidized when an atom present in a reactant molecule transfers electrons to other chemical species. When an atom is oxidized, its oxidation state increases and when an atom is reduced, its oxidation state decreases.

Interpretation Introduction

(c)

Interpretation:

Whether the given half reaction occurs at anode or cathode should be indicated.

Concept Introduction:

A redox reaction is meant to take place when the oxidation states of the atoms present in a chemical species are changed. Electrical energy can be generated through spontaneous oxidation-reduction reaction by making use of apparatus known as voltaic cell. It contains two half cells, at one of the half cell, oxidation takes place and at other half cell reduction takes place.

When these half cells containing the strip of the metal and the metal ion solution are placed in separate beakers, flow of electrons takes place from one half cell to other and these two half cells are connected by a salt bridge. The strip of the metal in each of these half cells is known as electrode and this strip is in contact with the metal ion solution.

Oxidation takes place at the electrode known as anode, whereas reduction reaction takes place at cathode.
