Concept explainers
To explain: The consequences of a mutation in the α-subunit of G protein which causes the reduction in its affinity for GDP and not GTP.
Introduction: G proteins are of two types: monomeric G proteins and trimeric G proteins. GPCR belongs to the class of trimeric G proteins. It has three subunits α, β and γ. Gα subunit has GTP hydrolysis activity and has the major role after ligand binding. GPCR is the most abundant G protein type receptor in which several ligands like hormones, neurotransmitters and several other proteins bind to. GPCR has a 7 transmembrane domain and belongs to Class Type IV receptors. It is also involved in the signaling of sense organs which includes vision, olfactory, touch, and taste.
To explain: The comparison of the Gα-subunit with cholera toxin.
