Chapter 16, Problem 9Q
Summary Introduction

To explain: The possibility of activation of the RTK when it is exposed to the antibodies which bind to the respective RTK.

Concept introduction: Receptor Tyrosine Kinases (RTK) are a unique group of receptors found on the membrane which have a kinase domain in them to phosphorylate the necessary target proteins (receptors also) to initiate the cascade. The kinase activity is activated only when the RTK receptor is in its dimer form. This acts as a check point to keep the initiation of cascade under check. The antibodies are proteins that identify a protein with their unique antigen binding site produced by the plasma cells. The antibodies are used by the plasma cells to defend against the invading pathogen. The same is exploited by the researchers to tag a protein to isolate the target protein of interest.
