Question
Chapter 18, Problem 18.71P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The product of the given transformation has to be drawn and the role of diisopropylethylamine played in this reaction has to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Stereoisomers are isomers which have different spatial arrangement in spite of same bond connectivity. Stereoisomers are due to the presence of sterocenters. Stereo center may be an atom axis (bond) or plane from which interchanging of two groups leads to stereoisomers.
Asymmetric center is a sterocenters which arises to hydrocarbons if the carbon is bonded to four different groups.

Alkylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride is a leave-on skin antiseptic used to treat such things as cuts and cold sores. It is also the antiseptic in many hand sanitizers. It is actually a mixture of compounds that differ in the number of carbons (any even number between 8 and 18) in the alkyl group. Show three different sets of reagents (each set composed of an alkyl chloride and an amine) that can be used to synthesize the alkylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride shown here.
