Answer to Problem 11R

HBr and H2O are polar covalent compounds and Cl2 is a non-polar covalent compound.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

Covalent bonds are formed between the atoms when there is a sharing of electrons occurs. Covalent bonds can be of two types such as polar covalent and non-polar covalent.

When there is a charge separation in a compound, then it is a polar compound. If there is no charge separation, then this is known as non-polar covalent.

In a polar covalent compound, one of the more electropositive elements develops δ+ charge and other elements being more electromagnetic develop the δ charge. The examples are HBr,H2O .

In HBr, hydrogen is electropositive and develops δ+ charge and bromine being electronegative develops δ charge. In H2O , oxygen is electronegative which develops δ charge and both the hydrogen develops δ+ charge. In Cl2 , both are Cl atoms and there is no charge separation between the atoms.

Therefore, HBr and H2O are polar covalent compounds and Cl2 is a non-polar covalent compound.

Conclusion:

Hence, HBr and H2O are polar covalent compounds and Cl2 is a non-polar covalent compound.
