Chapter 18.3, Problem 22R
To determine

The oxidation number of each atom in the given compounds.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 22R

Oxidation state of sodium is +1 and chlorine is -1 in sodium chloride compound. The oxidation state of oxygen in Iron (II) oxide is -2.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The compounds are Sodium chloride and iron (II) oxide.

Calculation:

Oxidation state of each atom in the compounds can be determined as

Sodium Chloride:

Sodium belongs to group 1 and it has 1 electron in the outermost shell. Therefore, oxidation state of the sodium is +1.

Chlorine belongs to group 17 and it has 7 electrons in its outermost shell and it requires 1 more electron to get noble gas configuration and thus it has the oxidation state of -1.

Therefore, oxidation state of sodium is +1 and chlorine is -1 in sodium chloride compound.

Iron (II) oxide:

Iron is a transition metal and it shows the oxidation state of +2 as written already in roman letter in the name of the compound itself. As the compound as a whole is neutral, the oxidation state of oxygen in Iron (II) oxide is -2.

Conclusion:

Hence, oxidation state of sodium is +1 and chlorine is -1 in sodium chloride compound. The oxidation state of oxygen in Iron (II) oxide is -2.
