Concept introduction:
Solubility depends on the nature of intermolecular forces (IMFs) in the solute and solvent. If both have the same type of IMFs, the solubility is high.
Polar compounds dissolve in polar solvents, while nonpolar compounds dissolve better in nonpolar solvents.
In compounds that contain both polar and nonpolar groups, the number of carbon atoms in the nonpolar part influences solubility. In a given class of compounds, the polar part of the molecule is fixed, so the solubility in polar solvents decreases as the length of the nonpolar (alkyl group) part of the compound increases.
In case of two types of compounds with different polar groups but same alkyl group, the solubility depends on the nature of the polar group.
