Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason due to which a person with type A blood can receive blood only from types A and O, but can donate either type A or AB blood needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Human blood is classified into 4 types A, B, AB and O. These blood types are determined by specific polysaccharides that are covalently bonded to a membrane protein in red blood cells. These polysaccharides contain the monosaccharide, D-galactose, L-fucose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine. Type A blood contains all four monosaccharide. Type B blood contains N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, two D-galactose units and L-fucose. Type AB blood has both type A and B carbohydrates. Type O blood contains N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, D-galactose and L-fucose.
