Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The reaction catalyzed by aspartate transaminase should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
The enzyme found throughout the body but mostly in the heart and liver and to a less extent found in kidneys and muscles is aspirate transaminase or AST. In a healthy individual, AST level in blood is low. If liver and kidney cells are damaged or injured, the release of AST into the blood occurs. As a result, AST is a useful test for detecting or monitoring liver damage.
(b)
Interpretation:
The reaction catalyzed by glyceraldehydes 3-phosphate dehydrogenase should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
An enzyme that catalyzes glycolysis (sixth step) is glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase also known as GAPDH and it breaks glucose for energy and carbon molecules.
