Chapter 22, Problem 51P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The principal organic product of each of the given reactions of ammonia and amines with α, β- unsaturated carbonyl compounds is to be predicted.

Concept introduction:

The α, β- unsaturated carbonyl compound has double bond at α, β position with respect to the carbonyl group.

In conjugate addition of carbonyl compound, the nucleophile attacks the β carbon of C=C by forming enolate ion intermediate, which is then converted to ketone in the reaction condition and gives the β substituted product.

Predict the products, propose mechanisms for the reactions of carboxylic acidderivatives with reducing agents, alcohols, amines, and organometallic reagentssuch as Grignard, organolithium, and organocuprate reagents
Show how the "o-chlorobenzoic acid" will be synthesized, beginning with benzene or toluene and any reagents required. Assume para, in ortho, para mixtures, is the main product (and separable from ortho).
