Concept Introduction:

Acetyl CoA produced by ß oxidation of fatty acids undergoes further oxidation in the TCA cycle. Some of this acetyl CoA is converted into three metabolites; acetone, acetoacetate and ß hydroxybutyrate. Process of formation of these metabolites is known as ketogenesis. Although ß hydroxybutyrate does not have a ketone functional group, those three groups are known as ketone bodies.
