Question
Chapter 23, Problem 17P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
A reaction scheme to show the product of the acyl-CoA dehydrogenase reaction that reacts with FAD should be written.
Concept Introduction:
Hypoglycin is a toxic amino acid and a metabolite and it acts as a acyl-CoA dehydrogenase substrate. For this reaction, the product acts as an irreversible inhibitor for acyl CoA dehydrogenase. It inhibits the enzyme by reacting with FAD.

Considering the fatty acids:
(a) Arachidic acid (C20H40O2); molar mass = 312.5 g/mol)
(b) Palmitoleic acid (C16H30O2); molar mass = 256.4 g/mol).
How many cycles of β -oxidation are needed for complete oxidation?
How many molecules of acetyl CoA are formed from its complete catabolism?
How can you calculate the number of molecules (moles) of ATP formed (net) by the complete catabolism of each fatty acid? and the number of moles of ATP formed per gram of each fatty acid metabolized??
Water production from fatty acid oxidation is a survival mechanism in animals where water is scarce. Cells oxidize palmitoyl-CoA to produce water. If an animal has 5.000 kg of palmitoyl-CoA available for fatty acid oxidation, how many kilograms of water could the animal produce from that palmitoyl-CoA? The chemical formula for palmitoyl-CoA is C37H66N7O17P3S.
