Chapter 23, Problem 23.8P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The resonance structure of para-intermediate drawn and the relative stability is to be noted.

Concept introduction:

The monosubstituted benzene shows electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction. The rate of electrophilic aromatic substitution depends on the type of substituent attached to the benzene ring. Substituents increasing the rate of reaction are called the activating group, and substituents decreasing the rate of reaction are called the deactivating group. The ortho/para-directing groups are activating groups, and meta-directing groups are deactivating groups. The major product of electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction depends on the more stable arenium ion intermediate.

In the Wittig reaction, the cyclic gxaphosphetane intermediate (shown below) undergoes fragmentation to produce an olefin and a phosphine oxide. Hypothetically, two possible arrow pushing mechanisms can be proposed but only one is correct. Please select one (mechanism 1 or mechanism 2) and explain why it is correct. If you believe both are correct, also explain why. Ph Ph. Ph Ph Ph Ph mechanism 1 mechanism 2 Ph + Ph Ph
Reaction Quenching. Our cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol reduction reaction is being quenched using HCl. Why do we use this reagent? Explain, in words and by drawing out acid/base chemistry reactions, what the quench would accomplish. Be sure to use pKa values in your explanation. HINT: there are 3 different quench reactions that occur. Look at the reagents and the mechanism for what species exist in the reaction mixture that can react with HCl.
