Methyl α-D- galactopyranoside and methyl β-D- galactopyranoside are to be distinguished using the periodate oxidation.

Concept introduction:

Oxidation is a type of reaction in which addition of oxygen atom or removal of hydrogen atom takes place. It occurs by loss of electrons. Oxidizing agent is the substance that causes oxidation in redox reaction. The carbonyls get oxidized to give carboxylic acids.

The periodate (an anion composed of iodine and oxygen) is an oxidisng agent.

Diastereomers are the isomers which are non-superimposable and are not mirror images of each other.
