Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure of missing compounds present in Wohl degradation reaction is to be stated. The curved-arrow mechanism for conversion of B to C and C to arabinose in the Wohl degradation reaction is to be shown.
Concept Introduction:
Wohl degradation is the reaction to convert aldose into other aldose with one carbon less. It is a chain contraction reaction of aldoses. The oxime of aldose is formed by reacting it with hydroxylamine and sodium methoxide. Then oxime will react with acetic anhydride in acetic acid and sodium acetate toform nitrile derivative. In the last step, the reaction with sodium methoxide in methanol results in removal of all acetate group and nitrile group toform aldose with one carbon lesser and sodium cyanide as by product.

- An aldose A, is reduced by sodium borohydride to an optically inactive alditol B. The Ruff degredation of A forms C. Oxidation of C by nitric acid generates the optically inactive diacid D. The ruff degreation of C forms D-glyceraldehyde. draw the structures for compounds A through D and discuss a mechanism for the reduction step using sodium borohydridearrow_forwardEnalapril is an anti-hypertension "prodrug" (i.e, a drug precursor) that is inactive until the ethyl ester (arrow in figure) is hydrolyzed by esterases present in blood plasma. The active drug is the dicarboxylic acid ("enalaprilat") that results from this hydrolysis reaction. (a) Enalapril is administered in pill form, but enalaprilat must be akdministered intravenously. Why do you suppose enalapril works as a pill, but enalaprilat does not? EtOoC -NH CH3 HOOC Enalapril (b) Enalaprilat is a competitive inhibitor of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which cleaves the blood-pressure regulating peptide angiotensin. ACE has a KM = 12 µM for angiotensin, which is present in plasma at a concentration of 75 µM. When enalaprilat is present at 2.4 nM, the activity of ACE in plasma is 10% of its uninhib- ited activity.
