Interpretation:

The equation for the final step in the catabolism of any fatty acids with an even number of carbon atoms should be written.

Concept introduction:

Fatty acids are aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids that are mostly obtained from the hydrolysis of natural fats and oils. They have a general formula R(CH2)nCOOH, n is mostly an even number of carbon atoms (4 to 20) with a few exceptions that have an odd number.

Fatty acids are highly water insoluble. Therefore it must be transported in blood in with a protein.

Catabolism is a metabolic process that breaks down large molecules into smaller molecules with releases of particular amount of energy in the form of ATP.

Enzyme:

  • It is a protein or a molecule which can act as a catalyst for a biological reaction.
  • Does not affect the equilibrium point of the reaction.
  • Active site of the enzyme is the region where the reaction takes place.
  • Enzyme’s activity can be specific which means the activity is limited to a certain substrate and a certain type of reaction and it is referred to as specificity of the enzyme.

Cofactor: It is a non-protein part of an enzyme which is essential to the enzyme’s catalytic activity and it can be a cofactor or a coenzyme.

Coenzyme: It is an organic molecule that acts as an enzyme cofactor.
