Introduction:
The inflow of sodium (Na+) ions in the plasma membrane through the membrane channel regulates the depolarization of nervous and muscular system and their functions. It is the main cation present in the extracellular fluid (ECF) and is associated with regulation of blood plasma osmolarity. Increased concentration of sodium raises the osmolarity of the blood. Also, it determines the level as well as distribution of total body water among several fluid compartments. Gradients of Na+ ions across the cell generate potential energy helps to transport other solutes. Also, it regulates body heat and pH of the ECF. Aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone, and natriuretic peptides regulate the concentration of Na+ in the body.

- Licorice is used as a remedy in Chinese traditional medicine and also is a flavoring for candy. When licorice is eaten, one of its components triggers the formation of a compound that mimics aldosterone and binds to receptors for it. Based on this information, explain why people who have high blood pressure are advised to avoid eating much licorice.arrow_forwardDiscuss the relationship between aldosterone hormone and blood pressurearrow_forwarddescribe the effects of ADH and aldosterone on body waterarrow_forward
- Which of the following statements correctly describes the role of aldosterone? a. Aldosterone triggers sodium ion and so water reabsorption. b. Aldosterone triggers potassium ion secretion. c. Aldosterone triggers hydrogen ion secretion. d. Both a and b are correct. e. All of the above are correctarrow_forwardDescribe the roles of antidiuretic hormone and aldosterone.arrow_forwardDefine the term Aldosterone?arrow_forward
- Which two ions are most affected by aldosterone?a. sodium and potassiumb. chloride and bicarbonatec. calcium and phosphated. sodium and phosphatearrow_forwardtrue or false Aldosterone is required to restore water from loop of Henle, and reabsorption of Na+ from this segment is increased by ADH, allowing equilibration of water with the hyperosmotic interstitiumarrow_forwardSome tumors of the adrenal cortex secrete excess aldosterone and may cause paralysis. Explain this effect andidentify the electrolyte and fluid imbalances you wouldexpect to observe in such a casearrow_forward
