Question
Chapter 24, Problem 8WWTS
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The respiratory buffer system regulates the pH by increasing or reducing the breath rate and depth. Addition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the body fluid increases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) and reduces the pH. Elimination of CO2 from the body fluid raises the pH. Thereby, the respiratory system buffers the acid or base when it becomes elevated. It has 2 to 3 folds strong buffering capacity when compared to chemical buffers.
