Important reactions of amino acids involve esterification of the carboxylic group and acylation of the amino group. These reactions are useful for protecting either the carboxyl group or the amino group. Acylating agent benzyl chloroformate converts the amino group to an amide group. Acylation of the amino group is done to protect it from unwanted nucleophilic reactions.
