A 135 mm telephoto lens for a 35 mm camera has f-stops that range from f/2.8 to f/22. (a) What are the smallest and largest aperture diameters for this lens? What is the diameter at f/11? (b) If a 50 mm lens had the same f-stops as the telephoto lens, what would be the smallest and largest aperture diameters for that lens? (c) At a given shutter speed, what is the ratio of the greatest to the smallest light intensity of the film image? (d) If the shutter speed for correct exposure at f/22 is 1/30 s. what shutter speed is needed at f/2.8? Calculate m1 and M2 for the two lenses and do not make the approximation that leads to Equation 25.4.

- A 7.5 binocular produces an angular magnification of —7.50, acting like a telescope. (Mirrors are used to make the image upright.) If the binoculars have objective lenses with a 75.0-cm focal length, what is the focal length of the eyepiece lenses?arrow_forwardWhy is it advantageous to use a large-diameter objective lens in a telescope? (a) It diffracts the light more effectively than smaller-diameter objective lenses. (b) It increases its magnification. (c) It enables you to see more objects in the field of view. (d) It reflects unwanted wavelengths. (e) It increases its resolution.arrow_forwardWhat is the angular magnification of a telescope that has a 100 cm-focal length objective and a 2.50 cm-focal length eyepiece?arrow_forward
- A good quality camera “lens” is actually a system of lenses, rather than a single lens, but a side effect is that a reflection from the surface of one lens can bounce around many times within the system, creating artifacts in the photograph. To counteract this problem, one of the lenses in such a system is coated with a thin layer of material (n=1.28) on one side. The index of refraction of the lens glass is 1.68. What is the smallest thickness of the coating that reduces the reflection at 640 nm by destructive interference? (In other words, the coating’s effect is to be optimized for =640 nm .)arrow_forwardTwo stars that are 109km apart are viewed by a telescope and found to be separated by an angle of 105 radians. If the eyepiece of the telescope has a focal length of 1.5 cm and the objective has a focal length of 3 meters, how far away are the stars from the observer?arrow_forwardWhat range of magnification is possible with a 7.0 cm-focal length converging lens?arrow_forward
- Two thin lenses of focal lengths f1 = 15.0 and f2 = 10.0 cm, respectively, are separated by 35.0 cm along a common axis. The f1 lens is located to the left of the f2 lens. An object is now placed 50.0 cm to the left of the f1 lens, and a final image due to light passing though both lenses forms. By what factor is the final image different in size from the object? (a) 0.600 (b) 1.20 (c) 2.40 (d) 3.60 (e) none of those answersarrow_forwardA 7.5x binocular produces an angular magnification of 7.50, acting like a telescope. (Mirrors are used to make the image upright.) If the binoculars have objective lenses with a 75.0 cm focal length, what is the focal length of the eyepiece lenses?arrow_forwardA nearsighted man cannot see objects clearly beyond 20 cm from his eyes. How close must he stand to a mirror in order to see what he is doing when he shaves?arrow_forward
- It has become common to replace the cataract-clouded lens of the eye with an internal lens. This intraocular lens can be chosen so that the person has perfect distant vision. Will the person be able to read without glasses? If the person was nearsighted, is the power of the intraocular lens greater or less than the removed lens?arrow_forwardThe eyepiece of a compound telescope has a focal length of 2.80cm and the objective lens has f=0.740 cm. If an object is placed 0.790cm from the objective lens, calculate a) the distance between the lenses when the microscope is adjusted for a relaxed eye, and b) the total magnification.arrow_forwardA certain telescope has an objective mirror with an aperture diameter of 200 mm and a focal length of 2 000 mm. It captures the image of a nebula on photographic film at its prime focus with an exposure time of 1.50 min. To produce the same light energy per unit area on the film, what is the required exposure time to photograph the same nebula with a smaller telescope that has an objective with a 60.0-mm diameter and a 900-mm focal length?arrow_forward
