Galileo’s telescopes, II. The characteristics that follow are characteristics of two of Galileo’s surviving double-convex lenses. The numbers given are magnitudes only; you must supply the correct signs. L1: front radius = 950 mm, rear radius = 2700 mm, refractive index = 1.528; L2: front radius = 535 mm, rear radius = 50,500 mm, refractive index = 1.550. (a) What is the largest angular magnification that Galileo could have obtained with these two lenses? (b) How long would this telescope be between the two lenses?

- Consider a refracting telescope that is made with two converging lenses- an objective lens (focal length 1.00m) and an eyepiece (focal length 50.0mm). The lenses are separated by a distance of 1.025m. If the viewer is looking at a distance object, such as craters on the moon, where will the final image of the eyepiece be located? (Note that this may not be the optimum construction to provide the greatest magnification.)arrow_forwardA stargazer has an astronomical telescope with an objective whose focal length is 180 cm and an eyepiece whose focal length is 1.20 cm. He wants to increase the angular magnifi cation of a galaxyunder view by replacing the telescope’s eyepiece. Once the eyepiece is replaced, the barrel of the telescope must be adjusted to bring the galaxy back into focus. If the barrel can only be shortened by 0.50 cm from its current length, what is the best angular magnifi cation the stargazer will be able to achieve?arrow_forwardUnless otherwise stated, the lens-to-retina distance is 2.00 cm. A 7.5 X binocular produces an angular magnification of -7.50, acting like a telescope. (Mirrors are used to make the image upright.) If the binoculars have objective lenses with a 75.0 cm focal length, what is the focal length of the eyepiece lenses?arrow_forward
- A 1.38 m-long Galilean telescope has an eyepiece lens with focal length -4.58 cm. Determine the lens power of the telescope. Give your answer in m-1, correct to 2d.p. The answer is NOT 0.70 or 0.75arrow_forwardWhy is it advantageous to use a large-diameter objective lens in a telescope? (a) It diffracts the light more effectively than smaller-diameter objective lenses. (b) It increases its magnification. (c) It enables you to see more objects in the field of view. (d) It reflects unwanted wavelengths. (e) It increases its resolution.arrow_forward
