To discuss:
How the small intestine is protected from the erosive effect of the stomach acid.
Introduction:
The small intestine lies between the stomach and the large intestine. The small intestine consists of three parts: the jejunum, the duodenum, and the ileum. It aids in the digestion and absorption of ingested food. The tissue layers of the small intestine are similar to the layers of the esophagus and the stomach. Simple columnar epithelial cells line the lumen. The externa possesses a thick circular layer inside. The jejunum and ileum are covered with serosa on all sides. However in the case of duodenal serosa, it is seen only on the anterior surface.

Many travelers avoid drinking the water in foreign countries but forget that ice is often made with local tap water! As a result, both Beth and Tom contracted an intestinal disease that causes severe diarrhea. (Diarrhea is characterized by loose watery bowel movements that, if left untreated, can cause serious health complications.) It is estimated that each year such "traveler's diarrhea" affects as many as 10 million Americans. High-risk destinations include the lesser-developed countries of Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and regions of Asia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a website to advise travelers. After 2 days of experiencing uncontrolled bouts of diarrhea, the couple sought medical attention at a nearby medical clinic. Various tests revealed that the culprit was the bacterium Escherichia coli.…arrow_forward
