The ion with one less oxygen atom than -ate is named an -ite ion.
The ion with two less oxygen atoms than -ate is named a hypo…ite ion.
When forming an acid from oxo-anions, -ate is converted to an -ic acid and an -ite is converted to an -ous acid.
