While naming the ionic compounds prefixes such as di or tri are not used to indicate any number of atoms.

a) Nitrogen dioxide

The compound nitrogen dioxide is formulated according to the first element nitrogen, with no subscript; and the second element dioxide, which becomes oxygen atom with the subscript 2 to indicate the presence of two oxygen atoms.

Therefore, the complete formula for nitrogen dioxide is NO2.

b) Calcium chloride

The compound calcium chloride is an ionic compound that is formulated according to the first element calcium, with no subscript; and the second element chloride, which becomes chlorine atom with the subscript 2 to indicate two chlorine atoms.

Therefore, the complete formula for calcium chloride is CaCl2.

c) Carbon monoxide

The compound carbon monoxide is formulated according to the first element carbon, with no subscript; and the second element oxide, which becomes oxygen with no subscript.

Therefore, the complete formula for carbon monoxide is CO
