Introduction:

Cryptococcal meningoencephalitis is an opportunistic fungal nervous system disease. It occurs in immunocompromised individuals like in people suffering from AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). A major cause isthe inhalation of spores of the species Cryptococcusgatti or Cryptococcus neoformans. Pathogenesis occurs after these spores enter the body andcause infection in lungs and inflammation in the meninges (the protective outer layer surrounding the brain). Symptoms such as a constant headache, dizziness, fever are prominent. During extreme cases, a fatality occurs.
