Chapter 26, Problem 8RQ
Summary Introduction
T cells should have the capability to differentiate between the harmless self-antigens, present in our body tissues, and the possibly dangerous nonself antigens. Hence, T cells attain unresponsiveness to self-antigens or tolerance. Matured lymphocytes recognize pathogenic organisms, generate antibodies, thereby, destroying the pathogen that could potentially cause damage to the host. There are several factors to control immune activity, in addition to antigen interaction. Antigen-reactive cells, which respond to infectious agents, however ignoring self-antigens are selected by clonal selection. A group of cell-surface molecular signals are essential in order to activate B cells and T cells.
