If the whole thyroid is removed completely it is called a thyroidectomy. If less is taken including the reduction of a lobe, then it is known as a partial thyroidectomy. Hypoparathyroidism is the low calcium levels because of parathyroid hormone detachment decreases from the parathyroid glands adjacent to the thyroid.
