Chapter 3.7, Problem 3.34P
A shear spring is made from two blocks of rubber, each having a height h, width b, and thickness a. The blocks are bonded to three plates as shown. If the plates are rigid and the shear modulus of the rubber is G, determine the displacement of plate A when the vertical load P is applied. Assume that the displacement is small so that δ = a tan γ ≈ aγ.

The rigid bar is supported by the two short white spruce wooden posts and a spring. If each of the posts has an unloaded length of 1 m and a cross-sectional area of 600 mm2, and the spring has a stiffness of k = 2 MN >m and an unstretched length of 1.02 m, determine the vertical displacement of A and B after the load is applied to the bar.
The A-36 steel bar consists of two segments, one of a circular cross-section of radius r, and one of square cross-section. If the bar is subjected to the axial loading of P, determine the dimensions of the square segment so that the strain energy within the square segment is the same as in the circular segment.
The driver of the sports car applies his rear brakes and causes the tires to slip. If the normal force on each rear tire is 1800 N and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the tires and the pavement is { { \mu }_{ k }=0.5 }μk=0.5, determine the average shear stress developed by the friction force on the tires. Assume the rubber of the tires is flexible and each tire is filled with an air pressure of 225 K P
