Introduction:
In cattle, short stature and short limbs are caused because of autosomal recessive mutation called Dexter. Cattles with a heterozygous genotype show short stature and limbs; cattle embryos with homozygous recessive genotype either spontaneously abort or are stillborn. This means that recessive homozygosity is lethal, and the individuals do not survive.

- You have a true-breeding strain of miniature-winged fruit flies, where this wing trait is recessive to the normal long wings. How would you show whether the miniature wing trait is sex-linked or autosomal?arrow_forwardNormally you cant inherit both copies of a homologous chromosome from the same parent. Why? Assuming that no crossing over has occurred, how likely is it that one of your non-sex chromosomes is an exact copy of the same chromosome your maternal grandmother had? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardAn allele responsible for Marfan syndrome Section 13.4 is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. What is the chance that a child will inherit the allele if one parent does not carry it and the other is heterozygous?arrow_forward
- A number of all-white cats are crossed, and they produce the following types of progeny: 1216 all-white, 316 black, and 116 gray. What is the genotype of the black progeny? a. Aa b. Aa Bb c. A_B_ d. A_barrow_forwardIn pea plants, flower color is determined by one gene with two alleles, with the allele coding for purple flowers (P) being dominant to the allele coding for white flowers (p). If two purple-flowered offspring resulting from a cross between homozygous dominant and white-flowered parents are crossed, what percentage of the progeny are expected to have the dominant phenotype?arrow_forwardIn chickens, the Leghorn variety has white feathers due to an autosomal dominant allele. Silkies have white feathers due to a recessive allele in a second (different) gene. If a true-breeding whiteLeghorn is crossed to a true-breeding white Silkie, what is theexpected phenotype of the F1 generation? If members of the F1generation are mated to each other, what is the expected phenotypic ratio of the F2 generation? Assume the chickens in the parental generation are homozygous for the white allele at one gene andhomozygous for the brown allele at the other gene. In subsequentgenerations, nonwhite birds will be brown.arrow_forward
- Cystic fibrosis is a recessive human condition. A male with Cystic fibrosis and a woman with a dominant phenotype have sevral children, in which one displays Cystic fibrosis. - The crossing of two orange-flowering plants results in ~2/3 orange-flower progeny and ~1/3 white-flower progeny. The crossing of two orange-flowering F1 plants generates the same progeny ratios as observed for the parental cross, while the crossing of white-flowering F1 plants only produces white-flowering progeny. What is a likely explanation for these results?arrow_forwardWhat is a reciprocal cross? Suppose that a gene is found as a wildtype (functional) allele and a recessive mutant (nonfunctional)allele. What would be the expected outcomes of reciprocal crossesif a true-breeding normal individual was crossed to a true-breedingindividual carrying the mutant allele? What would be the results ifthe gene is maternally inherited?arrow_forward. What is the probability of producing a child that willphenotypically resemble either one of the two parentsin the following four crosses? How many phenotypically different kinds of progeny could potentiallyresult from each of the four crosses?a. Aa Bb Cc Dd × aa bb cc ddb. aa bb cc dd × AA BB CC DDc.
