Chapter 4, Problem 35P
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

When cross-1 is done between white mutant A and white mutant B, the resulting F1 progeny is wild type (Purple). Analyze the results obtained from self-fertilization between F1 progeny and determine phenotypic ratio and phenotypic distribution among F2 progeny.

Introduction:

The condition mentioned above can be answered with the help of complementation test. Complementation test is performed in such a situation as it helps us understand whether the mutation that has occurred is cis mutation (mutation in same gene) or trans mutation (mutation in different set of gene). Complementation occurs when the progeny with normal (wild type) phenotype is observed from crossing between two organisms with different homozygous recessive mutation. On the other hand, complementation is not observed when mutation is in the same gene.

Mendel's second law is the law of independent assortment. According to this law, when cross is done for more than one trait (two or more), the traits organize independently (selection of one trait is not dependent on another), so different phenotypes may occur with equal probability.

Monohybrid Cross: 1) In dogs, wire hair (S) is dominant to smooth (s). a. In a cross between a homozygous wire-haired dog with a smooth haired dog what are the genotypes and phenotypes of the F1 generation? b. If a brother and sister from the F1 generation are crossed what is the expected ratio of wire-haired to smooth-haired dogs produced from this cross?
A female hamster from a true-breeding big-eared strain was crossed to a male hamster from a true-breeding short-whiskered strain. Their offspring(F1) had normal ear size and whisker legnth.  1. One of the F1 males was crossed to a true-breeding big-eared, short-whiskered female. the following progeny were obtained. Are the loci regulating ear size and whisker lenght linked, and if so, what is the map distance between them?  Normal ear, normal-whiskers  6 Big-eared, normal-whiskers  22 normal eared, short-whiskers  17 big-eared, shor-whiskers 5 2. Assume that the genes controlling ear size and whisker length are linked and have a map distance of 40cM. What would be the frequency of normal ear, short-whiskered hamsters among the progeny from a testcross of an F1 female?  a. 0.4 b. 0.2  c. 0.3 d. 0.5 e. 0.1
