Concept explainers
Interpretation:
For the given compounds, the ionic bonds, covalent bonds and coordinate covalent bonds are has to be identified.
Concept introduction:
Ionic bond takes place between a metal and a nonmetal where ions having opposite charges are held by electrostatic attraction. So it is an ionic bond.
Covalent bond is formed when electrons are shared between atoms to form a bond. When the electronegativity between two atoms is similar, sharing of electron in the bond is equal and is called nonpolar molecules. So it is a covalent bond.
Coordinate bond is Covalent bond in which the electrons to form the bond is given by a single atom.

- The “octet rule” in chemistry helps predict the types of bonds thatatoms will form. In general, an atom will be most stable if it fills itsouter shell of 8 electrons. Atoms with fewer than 4 valence electronstend to donate electrons and those with more than 4 valence electronstend to accept additional electrons; those with exactly 4 can do both.Using this rule, determine what category each of the followingelements falls into: N, S, C, P, O, H, Ca, Fe, and Mg.
