Chapter 43, Problem 2CHI
Summary Introduction

Bioremediation of soil is a biological process that is used to degrade, transform, breakdown, or to essentially remove the contaminants from the soil. It is a natural process which relies on plants, bacteria, and fungi to alter the contaminants. The metabolic processes of these organisms use the contaminants as an energy source and make them harmless or less toxic products.

If we are to rely on microorganisms to biodegrade wastes in landfills, aquatic habitats, and soil, list some ways that this process could bemade more efficient.
Discuss the possibility of life on Mars. Will extremophiles prove useful?  Can you explain the upper-temperature limit to life unrelated to the stability of proteins or nucleic acids? How influential is microbial activity on the geological processes of mineral formation and deposition compared to biological processes? Can you argue both sides? What are the challenges and advantages of the use of extremeophiles in industrial or bioremediation applications?
Why do we study how to control microbial growth? Give concrete examples wherein our understanding of microbial growth is applied.
