Chapter 43.4, Problem 5RIA
Summary Introduction
Direct leaching mechanism is mainly because of intimate contact, bacteria and adhesion to the mineral take place prior to the enzymatic attack by the organism. This leaching activity is inferred from scanning electron micrographs that demonstrates the adhesion of bacterial on mineral surfaces. This leaching mechanism is further confirmed by the leaching of synthetic sulfides free of iron, where only the direct attack of the bacteria can lead to leaching.
