Chapter 5, Problem 42P
The air velocity in the duct of a heating system is to be measured by a Pitot-static probe inserted into the duct parallel to the flow. If the differential height between the water columns connected to the two outlets of the probe is 3.2 m. determine (a) the flow velocity and (b) the pressure rise at the tip of the probe. The air temperature and pressure in the duct are 45°C and 98 kPa respectively.

The thrust developed by the engine of a Boeing 777 is about 380 kN. Assuming choked flow in the nozzles, determine the mass flow rate of air through the nozzle. Take the ambient conditions to be 215 K and 35 kPa.
An adiabatic nozzle has Refrigerant-134a at a pressure of 102 psi and temperature of 248°F entering steadily at a velocity of 66 ft/s. It leaves the nozzle at a pressure of 58 psi and a temperature of 86°F.
a.) Determine the exit velocity in feet per second.
b.) Determine the ratio of the inlet cross-sectional area to the outlet cross-sectional area (Ain/Aout).
Air at 110 kPa and 50 °C flows through the 6 cm diameter duct at a flow rate of 45 L/s in the direction of the arrow. The channel is narrowed to a diameter of 4 cm by means of a reducer. The pressure change in the channel is measured with a water flow manometer. Since the height difference between points 1 and 2 marked in the figure is 20 cm, determine the height difference (h) between the arms of the manometer. (Hint: The altitude difference is negligible as it is fluid air.)
(R=0.287 kPa.m^3/kg.K, ρ(water)= 1000 kg/m^3 , g=9.81 m/s^2)
