Concept explainers
(a)
To explain why did we randomize the order in which each student used the two different step heights.
(a)
Explanation of Solution
Your second performance is likely to be a bit worse than your first performance because you will be a bit more tired due to the exercise and it will thus more likely require you to use more energy.
Moreover, it is also possible that your experience in the exercise will make you better and thus it is possible that your second attempt will be better.
To try to eliminate these effects in the results, we will randomize the order of the two different step heights such that for each step height, there are some subjects who used this step height first and some who used it second.
(b)
To examine the class data from a different angle and follow the four step statistical problem solving process.
(b)
Explanation of Solution
The four step statistical problem solving process is explained as follows:
Step 1) Plan: What is the statistical question we want to answer?
Is there a learning effect between the first and second step height?
Step 2) Collect Data: Perform the experiment described in the activity
Step 3) Analyze Data: Compare the pulse rates for the two exercises. Create tables and graphs summarizing the results.
Step 4) Interpret Results: Make conclusions based on the tables and graphs created in above step.
