Chapter 7, Problem 17bCP
Summary Introduction
To review:
Production of postsynaptic inhibition and interaction of IPSP and EPSP (excitatory postsynaptic potential).
Introduction:
Neurotransmitters like glycine and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) hyperpolarizes postsynaptic membrane and they make the interior of the membrane more negative than its resting potential. Hyperpolarization caused by neurotransmitters is therefore called inhibitory postsynaptic potential (IPSP) since it inhibits postsynaptic neuron activity.
