Good forecasting and control of preconstruction activities leads to more efficient use of time and resources in highway construction projects. Data on construction costs (in $1000s) and person-hours of labor required on several projects are presented in the following table and are taken from the article “Forecasting Engineering Manpower Requirements for Highway Preconstruction Activities” (K. Persad, J. O’Connor, and K. Varghese, Journal of Management Engineering, 1995:41–47). Each value represents an average of several projects, and two outliers have been deleted.
- a. Compute the least-squares line for predicting y from x.
- b. Plot the residuals versus the fitted values. Does the model seem appropriate?
- c. Compute the least-squares line for predicting ln y from ln x.
- d. Plot the residuals versus the fitted values. Does the model seem appropriate?
- e. Using the more appropriate model, construct a 95% prediction interval for the cost of a project that requires 1000 person-hours of labor.

- The dataset below was collected from a survey to determine whether CFT development in the island can be used as a strategy for the sustainable management and utilization of the fishery and aquatic resources in small islands. It shows the monthly income (in thousand pesos) estimated by 200 randomly selected fishers in Guimaras according to the type of fishers (i.e., the income source of fishers is solely fishing or they have alternative/supplemental livelihood such as island hopping services, sari-sari store ownership, fish value adding and/or vending, souvenir selling, carpentry, as construction worker, farming and tour guiding) and their perceived benefit from CFT development in the island. From this dataset and using = 0.05, is there a significant difference in estimated monthly income due tofisher type? How about due to the CFT perceived benefit? How about due to the interaction between fishertype and the perceived CFT benefit?a. To control the risk of damage to the nuclear core during accidents at nuclear plants, the reliability of emergency diesel generators (EDG) to start on demand must be maintained at a very high level. At each nuclear power plant there are a number of such generators. An overall measure of reliability is obtained by counting the number of times the EDGs successfully work when needed. The table here provides the number of successful demands for implementation of an EDG between each subsequent failure in an EDG for all the EDGs at each of seven nuclear power plants. A regulatory agency wants to determine if there is a difference in the reliability of the seven nuclear power plants. (Use Data _8). Do the conditions necessary for conducting the ANOVA test appear to be satisfied by these data? Run an ANOVA (Regardless of the assumptions) and…arrow_forwardIn a 1996 article published in Technometrics, 38, pp. 11–22, the authors discuss the reliability of nuclear power plant emergency generators. - A survey of high school students was done to examine whether students had ever driven a car after consuming a substantial amount of alcohol (1=yes, 0=no). Data was collected on their sex (male/female), race (White/non-White), and grade level (9,10,11,12). Researchers realized that the impact of race on consuming alcohol before driving might vary by grade level and decided to fit the following model. Variable Coding = 1 if Intercept Sex () Female Race () Black Grade level ( 9th grade 10th grade 11th grade [Reference = 12th grade] Attached is the logistic model 1.
