Chapter 8.6, Problem 38P
Summary Introduction

Interpretation:Explain the term SMED. Discus the methods and benefits, if any of, reducing the die changing operations.

Concept Introduction:SMED is an acronym for SINGLE MINUTE EXCHANGE OF DIES. This mean that any set up change (in general-though the term uses die) should not take ANY time. Single and die both are symbolic words.

Whenever there is a change of model on any machine, the tooling is required to be changed. This takes time which, as per lean does not add value to the customer. In heavy machines, it can take multiple hours during which there can be no production.

Describe the problem involved in managing the transition from traditional to lean operation?
You arrive at the airport and wonder to what extent the security checkpoint is a leanoperation. Among other things, you observe that it takes about 30 seconds to check anID, scan a passenger for weapons, and X-ray their luggage. However, the average customer spends about 20 minutes in the process. This observation is an example of whichof the following?a. Waste of capacityb. Waste of a flow unit’s timec. Waste of materialsd. This observation is unrelated to lean.
In what way can die-changing operations be reduced by orders ofmagnitude? Why is it an advantage to do so?
