Introduction:

One of the reasons for the high virulence of system fungal infections caused by Candida, Mycobacterium, and Cryptococcus is that they are able to survive macrophage phagocytosis. In these fungi, the glyoxylate cycle is activated by phagocytosis, which allows them to use a two-carbon substrate for growth.
